LEEDS THEATRE PRODUCTION WINS TOP HONORS AT STATE FESTIVAL

Leeds Theatre and Arts Center Project of Leeds Arts Council, Inc.The Leeds Theatre and Arts Center production of “ECHOES” recently competed at the Alabama Conference of Theatre Festival in Guntersville, Alabama on October 25. The play was awarded “Best of Festival”, which is the top honor. The script was written by N. Richard Nash and the production was directed by Cliff Keen, Jr. who has been the resident director for LAC for the last seven years.

The show stars Ashley Richardson, Thomas Shaw and Cliff Keen, Jr. The technical side was run by Rick and Alec Beiswenger. Sandi Nicholson, President of the LAC Board, also attended to give moral support.

“ECHOES” is the story of two people who are in an asylum who believe they have built the perfect world. But the outside world keeps crashing in. Both Ashley and Cliff won Excellence in Acting Awards for their roles.

The production that was taken to Guntersville was a cutting of the original script. Keen cut the two hour play down to a show that fits the parameters of the competition. For the competition, each theatre must present a show that is sixty minutes in length, adjudicated by three distinguished judges from the region, Holly Brock Cahill, Lynn Nelson and Stephen E. Krempsky. They compete with theatres from all over the state. Leeds has participated for the last two years. Last year Ashley Richardson won Best Actress and Bill Allen was an all star cast winner in the play ” BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE” written by Ashley Richardson.

“ECHOES” will now move onto the Regional Festival at the Southeastern Conference of Theatre Competition being held in Chattanooga, Tennessee in March 4-8, 2015. The competition will be SETC’S 66th Annual Convention and will be held at the Chattanooga Convention Center. The cast will compete with states in the region for the opportunity to represent Alabama at the National Theatre Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan in June, 2015.
