UAB Jazz Faculty Quintet Performance

The Leeds Arts Council presents the UAB Jazz Faculty Quintet performing on Sunday, February 11 at 4:00 pm at the Leeds Theatre and Arts Center located at 8140 Parkway Drive, downtown Leeds, Alabama. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 students.

UAB Jazz Faculty Quintet is made up of some of the finest jazz musicians in Alabama. It includes UAB jazz professors Gary Wheat, (tenor saxophone) Carlos Pino (guitar) Michael Glaser (drums) Brandon Peeples (bass) and is led by UAB jazz director Steve Roberts (trumpet).

UAB Jazz Faculty travel to Colombia to teach jazz master classes to university students in many different cities, and also present free concerts that are open to the public in each town they visit.  In addition to sharing their knowledge about jazz, they want to foster a relationship between UAB and various universities and cultural organizations in Colombia. There are several organizations that help them while they are there; one is the Centro Cultural Colombo Americano, a partnership between Colombia and the United States dating back to 1954 that is about teaching English in Colombia and the sharing of culture between the two countries.  Another one is Sevijazz, a free jazz festival in the town of Sevilla, in the heart of coffee country, which hosts jazz groups from all over Colombia and surrounding countries.  UAB Jazz also gets a lot of support from the universities they visit, such as Universidad de Caldas in Manizales and ICESI and Universidad del Valle, both in the city of Cali.

In addition to their performance on February 11, UAB jazz will show pictures and talk about their latest trip to Columbia.
