Leeds Historical Society Meeting

The Leeds Historical Society will meet at 2 pm on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Leeds Historic Depot, located at 933 Thornton Avenue. The public is invited, admission is free, and refreshments will be served.

James Lowery, president of the Mid-South Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society (R&LHS), will speak about that organization and the work it is doing to restore many of the operating features of the depot. For example, the chapter is installing a working telegraph and telephone system in the agent-operator’s office. In addition, an adjoining waiting room houses a permanent exhibit that features displays of railroad artifacts and photographs from Birmingham and Leeds.

The Leeds Historical Society is a non-profit organization that meets every other month.

The Leeds Historic Depot serves as the headquarters of the Mid-South chapter of the R&LHS. Built in 1883-1884 and restored in 1976, the depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The Leeds Historical Society leases and cares for the depot, which is owned by the City of Leeds.
