COVID-19 Closure of Nonessential Businesses
COVID-19 Closure of Nonessential Businesses | Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Friday ordered the closure of most nonessential businesses in that state in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
Ivey, who in comments earlier this week appeared focused on getting people back to work, also defended her decision not to issue a more restrictive, statewide “shelter in place” order, though she encouraged residents to stay home as much as possible.
The closure of most businesses is a significant move by the Republican governor and comes after President Donald Trump this week commented about getting people in certain areas of the country back to work as early as next week.
Under the order, entertainment venues, retails stores, athletic facilities, gyms, hair salons and other service providers must close their doors beginning 5 p.m. Saturday. Restaurants offering dine-in or takeout may stay open, as can gun stores, grocery stores and other businesses deemed essential.
