Artist Reception
Sunday, June 1, 1:30-3:30pm
Charlotte Holder
Opening Reception for Artist Charlotte Holder to be Sunday, June 1

Charlotte Holder is Leeds Arts Council’s Artist of the Month. LAC will honor the artist with an opening reception on Sunday, June 1 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Leeds Theatre and Arts Center, 8140 Parkway Drive, downtown Leeds. The public is invited. There is no charge; however, her work, which she describes as “fanciful and fun” will be on exhibit in LAC’s gallery through June 26 and will be available for purchase.

Charlotte Holder enjoys painting animals, especially dogs. Her work is often based on Word Play. She loves to take a word or phrase and turn it around to mean something else and make a painting of it. If it brings a smile or laughter to the viewer, she considers it successful. She says she views every day as an adventure, a carpet ride. She tries to convey this world of possibilities as a child sees it…perpetual summer, reachable stars, a word with no prejudice and no limits.

The artist has degrees in art from William Woods University, Fulton, MO (AFA) and the University of Memphis (BFA) with continuing Art Ed at the Memphis Art Academy, UAH and UAB. She has had one-woman shows at Southern Research, UAB Hospital, Memphis Athletic Club, Little Rock Museum of Art (AR), Meridian Museum of Art (MS), Park ART, and for four consecutive years at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
She has won numerous awards in art and community service including being chosen as Outstanding Young Woman of Alabama in 1972. She has published two children’s books which she wrote and illustrated: “Sir Ratword: and “Three Sheeps to the Wind: that are available on Amazon. Her work can be seen on her website, CatharticDesigns.com.

Charlotte Holder spent many years as a senior designer for Symbol of Excellence (now Hoffman Publishing) where she designed needlework patterns primarily for cross-stitch magazines, including Disney, Peanuts, Sesame Street and the Beginner’s Bible. For several years, she was Executive Director of PARK ART, an organization that took art and music into the parks and schools in disadvantaged areas in Birmingham. She has been on the board of VSA for many years and through the organization she teaches art to children and adults with disabilities.

The artist is a member of the Birmingham branch of the National League of American Pen Women and on the board of South City Theater. She does a lot of theater-related art, painting sets for shows and teaching art at their summer camp for children.

For more information regarding the reception and exhibit or upcoming Leeds Arts Council events, call the arts center at 699-1892.
