The Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed author and Chamber board member Chris Oldenburg as the featured speaker at its February luncheon, where he delivered a thought-provoking message on an often-overlooked issue affecting businesses nationwide: loneliness.

Drawing from his forthcoming book, The Path Out of Loneliness, Oldenburg shared research and personal insight on the growing epidemic of workplace loneliness. Citing national data, he noted that 61% of workers report feeling lonely, and nearly half of CEOs say they experience isolation in their roles. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, the health effects of chronic loneliness can be comparable to smoking 15 to 20 cigarettes per day.

“Loneliness isn’t a soft issue,” Oldenburg told attendees. “It impacts productivity, engagement, turnover, creativity, and ultimately the bottom line. Connection is not optional — it’s a competitive advantage.”

Oldenburg introduced what he calls the “Five Pillars Framework” — practical principles designed to help leaders move from isolation to alignment and purpose in both business and life:

  • Reach before you retreat
  • Remember before you react
  • Rejoice before you resent
  • Repair before you replace
  • Reconnect with purpose

He encouraged local business leaders to intentionally build cultures of connection within their organizations, emphasizing that strong businesses are built on strong relationships.

Oldenburg, who has worked closely with business owners and leaders throughout his career, shared personal experiences that inspired his message, including lessons from his upbringing and years working alongside high-achieving professionals who outwardly appeared successful but inwardly struggled with isolation. Attendees were invited to scan a QR code to receive the introduction and first chapter of The Path Out of Loneliness, which is currently in production.

The luncheon was catered by Rusty’s Bar-B-Q and hosted at Leeds First Methodist Church. The Chamber extends special thanks to the ladies of the church for serving the meal and to the church congregation for its continued hospitality. The Chamber is also grateful to its Student Diplomats for their assistance during the event.
