March Guest Speaker: Ray Melick – 1819 News
Join the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce for our March Chamber Luncheon. We are excited to announce that our guest speaker will be Ray Melick of 1819 News. Our meeting is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on March 17, 2022 at Leeds First United Methodist Church Family Life Center located at 1189 6th Street. Lunch is $15 payable at the door (NOTE: Due to the cost of food and catering, our luncheon is now $15). Please make your reservations by Tuesday, March 15.
Guest Speaker: Ray Melick
Ray Melick is no stranger to Alabama media. Ray spent almost 30 years working in media both in Georgia and Alabama, earning numerous state and national awards for his work at the Birmingham Post-Herald and the Birmingham News. In addition, Melick co-hosted a long-running afternoon drive-time sports talk show on WJOX in Birmingham and was an original co-host of The Zone, a popular Sunday night sports talk show on ABC 33/40.
He comes to 1819 news from the office of United States Congressman Gary Palmer, where Melick was the District Director, overseeing the day-to-day activities of the 6th Congressional District office. Prior to that, Melick worked for Georgia Pacific in Government and Public Affairs, and served as Director of Communications for the Gulf Coast Restoration Organization, part of BP America, during the Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico.During his career as a journalist Melick wrote for and contributed to a number of publications, including Sports Illustrated, Scripps-Howard News Service, Lindy’s Sports Journals, MSNBC Sports, Baptist Press, and Sports Spectrum magazine. He was recognized as the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Sportswriter of the Year of Alabama three times, is a past president of the Alabama Sportswriters Association, and has won numerous professional awards for his work both nationally and locally.
A native of East Point, Ga., and graduate of the University of Georgia’s Grady School of Journalism, Melick has lived in Alabama for 49 years. He and his wife of 30 years have raised and educated three children here, co-founding and running a homeschool cooperative that grew from 27 students to more than 200 offering classes from kindergarten to 12th grade and continues to this day. He is a member of Mountain Brook Community Church, where he has served as an Elder.
